AGI staff has started to plan out and take measurements at the UCSD Medical Center to begin construction of a temporary helistop.  It will be used by the new Cardiovascular Center (CVC) on campus for patient transportation.  Their permanent helistop will approximately be ready for use in 2017 and is planned to be built on the roof of the future Jacobs Medical Center Tower.  This temporary helistop will be currently built near UCSD Housing, Mandell-Weiss Eastgate City Park, La Jolla Country Day School, and Regent Apartment Complex, all which are residential areas.  In order to minimize unwanted noise to these areas near the helistop, one must follow federal and city guidelines, like the Aviation Safety and Noise Abatement Act of 1979, Federal Aviation Regulations and the San Diego Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC).  By following theses regulations and collecting data from specifically placed receptors, the staff members of AGI are able to evaluate the effects of sound when a helicopter lands or leaves the stop.

Utilizing the Federal Aviation Administration’s Integrated Noise Model (INM), AGI staff can determine future noise levels of the UCSD helistop operation.  With carefully organized approach tracks for the helicopter from West and East, the helicopter would make not as much noise to the surrounding area.  Inputting all the collected data into the INM modeling, one is able to conclude that this project’s unwanted sounds would be as minimal as possible for nearby residence.
